I stumbled in the half-light of dawn the next morning, hastily washing with the rest of the bondwomen and eating some of the pottage Agrippina had prepared before going to Aurelia’s chambers.

As she ate and I gathered her things in preparation for the daily walk to the baths, I had the boldness to ask her if we would be visiting Julia again that day.

‘I think not, Marcella,’ Aurelia replied sleepily. ‘I promised Rufus I would try to read some of Virgil. Besides, Augustus will be dining here tonight one last time. His cohort is being called up to attend to some rebellion in the north.’

My heart quickened. ‘Dost thou know where the rebellion is?’

Aurelia laughed scoffingly. ‘Of course not. He never tells me things like that. I only know that he is going away.’

The thought crossed my mind that Lucius must also be going, as he was part of Augustus’ cohort. A rebellion in the north? Was it in my own country? It might not be in Britannia—rebellions sometimes took place in Germania or Gaul. But, oh, what if it was?

A deep pang of the homing-hunger came upon me, and my hands trembled as they picked up Aurelia’s things for the baths. I was relieved that she did not question my strange behaviour, for I did not know how I could have answered if she had.
